We’re seeing a new Amex Offer for Marriott hotels that allows you to earn a $60 (CAD) statement credit upon spending $250 (CAD) on Marriott hotel stays within Canada and the United States. We last saw a similar offer in Summer 2023, and it’s sure to be one of the more popular Amex Offers this year.
You have until December 15, 2024 to take advantage; however, with a cap to the number of cardholders who can register, you’ll want to act quickly before space fills up.
Marriott Hotels in Canada and the US: Spend $250, Get $60
The new Marriott Amex Offer requires manual registration before they will apply on your card.
You’ll get a $60 (CAD) statement credit upon making a $250 (CAD) purchase at a Marriott property in Canada or the United States.
If you were to make a purchase of exactly $250 (CAD), you’d effectively unlock a 24% discount on your purchase via the $60 (CAD) statement credit.
This offer has a registration cap of 50,000 cardholders, so be sure to log in to your Amex online dashboard to register now so you don’t miss out.
The offer has shown up on a wide range of American Express products, like the Business Platinum Card by American Express, American Express Aeroplan Reserve Card, the American Express Cobalt Card, and more. Keep an eye out for the offer on both the Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card and the Marriott Bonvoy Business American Express Card, which would provide the highest earning rate on Marriott purchases.
Because the credit is applied on the Amex side, the discount will kick in based on the final amount charged by the Marriott hotel. That means you can combine it with other ongoing deals, such as Edmonton’s Best Hotels – as long as the bill is at least $250 (CAD), you’ll get the $60 (CAD) credit.
It’s worth noting that cumulative purchases also count for this offer. Therefore, as long as you spend a total of at least $250 (CAD) during the offer period, you’ll still be eligible for the statement credit.
The Amex Offer is valid until December 15, 2024. As usual, this refers to the transaction date of your hotel stay, so any hotel stay that ends by that date (excluding prepaid stays) should work.
The Fine Print
The most relevant part of the terms and conditions is as follows:
Offer valid for stays at participating Marriott Bonvoy hotels in Canada, the United States, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico. Reservations must be made directly with Marriott online at www.marriott.com, via the Marriott Bonvoy App or by calling 1-888-236-2427. Not valid on bookings made through travel agents or travel sites, including American Express Travel Services. Offer valid only on room rates and room charges. Not valid on stays paid for before the Offer Period start date or after the Offer Period end date. The following brands are excluded: Marriott Vacation Club, Homes and Villas by Marriott Bonvoy, Vistana, Bvlgari, Protea Hotels by Marriott, City Express, Four Points Express by Sheraton, Marriott Executive Apartments, Apartments by Marriott Bonvoy, Residences by Marriott International, Ritz-Carlton Reserve, and Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection. Not valid on flights, rental cars, and vacation packages. Excludes purchases of gift cards, retail purchases, dining, hotel amenities, events, and purchases of Marriott Bonvoy® Points.
As you can see, there’s quite a number of excluded brands, although their collective footprint in Canada and the US is quite limited.
For those of you who play the game in two-player mode or more, note that most Marriott hotels require that you pay with a credit card that’s in your own name.
Enhancing Your Stay with Marriott STARS and Luminous
If you don’t have Marriott Bonvoy elite status, or even if you do but you wish to further elevate your stay, booking with Prince of Travel through Marriott STARS or Luminous would entitle you to additional benefits for no additional cost.
Since you pay at the property directly, you’ll still be eligible for the statement credit through this Amex Offer.
Luxury hotels like the St. Regis Toronto, The Ritz-Carlton Toronto, and The Ritz-Carlton Montreal can be booked via Marriott STARS. Meanwhile, a wider range of properties, including The DOUGLAS Vancouver and the W Montreal, can be booked via Marriott Luminous.
Book a hotel stay with Prince of Travel through Marriott STARS and enjoy exclusive additional benefits at no cost to you, including:
- Daily breakfast for two guests
- Room upgrade, subject to availability at check-in
- $100 (USD) property credit
- In-person welcome and personalized welcome amenity and note
- Third, Fourth, or Fifth Night Free at select properties
Book a hotel stay with Prince of Travel through Marriott Luminous and enjoy exclusive additional benefits at no cost to you, including:
- Daily breakfast for two guests
- Room upgrade, subject to availability at check-in
- Early check-in and late check-out, subject to availability
- Welcome amenity
- $100 (USD) property credit at select properties
- Third, Fourth, or Fifth Night Free at select properties
The Marriott STARS or Luminous rates are the same as the best available flexible rate, which can be higher than prepaid rates, member rates, corporate rates, etc. that you may also have access to.
In this case, you’ll want to weigh up the savings on those rates and how much you value the benefits of booking through STARS or Luminous. Either way, you can take advantage of the current Amex Offer to get $60 (CAD) off your stay(s) of $250+ (CAD).
Scotiabank Amex Cardholders Can Register Too
As we’ve seen on previous Amex Offers, the “Spend $250, Get $60” Marriott offer is also available for Scotiabank American Express cardholders to register via this link.
This option is available to cardholders of the Scotiabank American Express Card, Scotiabank Gold American Express Card, and Scotiabank Platinum American Express Card.
This gives you yet another option to amplify your savings under this promotion, especially as Scotiabank-issued Amex cards can be manually registered for the offer, whereas Amex-issued Amex cards cannot.
Conclusion
American Express has rolled out a new set of $60 (CAD) statement credits on Marriott hotel stays of $250+ (CAD) in Canada.
All current cardholders should see at least one of these offers on their accounts, as long as you’ve held your card for a few weeks and have started seeing Amex Offers roll in.
Don’t forget to register on your Amex Offers dashboard before the maximum number of registrations is hit, and then start planning your Marriott hotel stays (or gift card purchases) before December 15, 2024.
will this stack with the stay Vancouver Mastercard rebate?
I got the offer on my Business Edge card.
I asked this earlier and hoping for a response based on a data point. I have a stay booked in Europe in August and would love to pick up the gift card here and get this offer (my local Courtyard sells them). The gift cards you buy at the desk (from what I understand) are in Canadian Dollars.
The spoke to the hotel and they said they accept Marriott Gift Cards – is it safe to assume I won’t run into any issues that its CDN funds and not US funds? The hotel itself doesn’t seem to know as they said they’ve only ever seen US$ gift cards. I would hope it would simply be a matter of applying the FX rate?
I got a $400 Marriott gift card at a Marriott in Toronto and when I checked the balance online they had converted the amount to U.S. dollars. I will use it where they accept USD, as I don’t want to lose on the conversion a second time.
It is not correct. Your gift card is always in Canadian dollar. It just the webpage displays it as USD. You can check later and your balance should be changed based on the exchange rate. Do worry, the exchange rate is always good for Marriott GC. You can use it anywhere you want.
Is there a link to register for the $350, get $100 credit?
Thanks
I bought a Marriot Gift Card from the front desk of Marriot Pinnacle Vancouver and it successfully triggered $50 Bonvoy Credit and $50 Discover British Columbia credit. So it’s confirmed now that both offer stacks 😃
Thanks for the update Jay! BTW – does anyone know if Canadian gift cards can be used at Marriott properties outside of Canada?
Marriott Gift Cards can be used Globally (except India) but can’t be used at their selected brands: Bvlgari Hotels, Design Hotels™, Homes & Villas by Marriott International Marriott™, The Ritz-Carlton Destination Club®.
Perfect! So I assume the hotel just applies an FX charge as the funds are in Canadian $.
Thanks for confirming! Gonna purchase the gift card now from my local Courtyard by Marriott.
Nicely done boss. Good update!!
Hey Ricky,
I see that you explicitly mention that prepaid booking won’t trigger the credit. I was planning to call in some properties and prepay some stays for the family. How would Amex know if the transaction is for a current stay or prepaid stay?
I think he means stay needs to be completed by Oct 15, or If the stay is beyond October 15th but if it is prepaid, it should work.
You can buy gift cards online at Marriott’s website. Do you think that would work as well as buying a gift card at the front desk of a specific property?
Like CSP said, online gift cards are explicitly excluded in the T&C and historically haven’t triggered the credit.
It explicitly states in the T&C that online gift cards are ineligible. That’s why the recommendation is to go to the front desk, which is more nebulous in how the charge would appear.
Can we book gift cards over the phone from hotel by calling the front desk?
Most hotels require you to be physically present to swipe your credit card.
Would this stack withAmex’s $200 travel credit on the plat?
Not directly. To use the $200 travel credit, you typically have to pre-pay for the hotel via Amex Travel, rather than paying at the hotel upon checkout to use the Amex Offer. You could use the $200 travel credit to pay for the room and then use the Amex Offer on incidentals, or redeem the two credits towards separate hotel nights.
Does this really stack with the 20,000 AP offer as implied in the article? It seems that booking through the Aeroplan portal requires prepayment – which would not be a payment directly to Marriott Bonvoy, which should not trigger the $50/$100 statement credit.
Yeah this was my oversight as it wouldn’t stack directly since the Vancouver promotion is prepaid. I’ll go ahead and fix that.
How would you combine with the BC aeroplan offer, since that would be aeroplan and not BC. You mean bill three nights vis Aeroplan then extend your stay with a marriott cash booking for $350?
It wouldn’t stack directly as the Vancouver promotion is prepaid as you’ve pointed out. Instead, you could apply the Amex Offer to room incidentals or further nights.
