Aeroplan Elite Status: Accelerate Your Status Through September 2022

Air Canada and Aeroplan have put out a series of strong incentives to make it easier for members to earn and retain status in 2022, for 2023 and beyond.

From now until April 30, 2022, a trio of promotions will help members rack up Status Qualifying Miles, Segments, and Dollars and boost their elite status plans for the upcoming year.

Furthermore, the 100% bonus SQM, SQS, and SQD promotion has been extended through September 30, 2022 for Air Canada flights to Europe, allowing you to boost your status qualification with your summer transatlantic travels.

How to Qualify for Aeroplan Elite Status

As a reminder, Aeroplan Elite Status qualification is determined based on a combination of Status Qualifying Miles (SQM), Segments (SQS), and Dollars (SQD) that a member earns through their paid flying activity over a given year.

Since Aeroplan’s relaunch in November 2020, we’ve seen many creative promotions in which SQM, SQS, and SQD were offered as incentives for engaging more closely with the program, beyond merely through flying activity. That trend has only continued with this quarter’s status promotion.

Get More Out of Aeroplan: Bonus 5,000 SQM, 5 SQS, and 500 SQD

The first component of the status promotion allows members with existing Aeroplan Elite Status to earn a one-time bonus of 5,000 SQM, 5 SQS, and 500 SQD by further engaging with the Aeroplan loyalty program.

You’ll earn the bonus SQM, SQS, and SQD by completing three of the following five items by April 30, 2022:

  • Link your Aeroplan and Starbucks Rewards accounts
  • Link your Aeroplan and Uber or Uber Eats accounts
  • Earn points with the Aeroplan eStore, LCBO, Starbucks, Uber, Uber Eats or a car or hotel booking
  • Redeem points for any merchandise or gift card at the Aeroplan eStore or for a car or hotel booking
  • Hold a core, premium, or business Aeroplan co-branded credit card through April 30, 2022 (including the US-issued Chase Aeroplan Card)

If you’ve already completed some of the items from before the promotion period, then you’ll automatically qualify for that criterion, as long as the completion status remains the same through April 30.

For example, I’ve already linked my Starbucks and Uber accounts, and currently hold a premium Aeroplan credit card. I don’t need to take any further action to satisfy three of the five criteria by April 30, and I’ll automatically get my bonus SQM, SQS, and SQD.

One thing to note is that the bonus SQD also counts beyond status qualification itself – it can help you get closer to earning Priority Rewards as well!

Indeed, with 500 bonus SQD that you can easily collect here, you’ll only need a further 3,500 SQD to earn your first Priority Reward at 4,000 SQD – and as we’ll see below, that can get even easier too.

100% Bonus SQM, SQS, SQD Through April 30 + September 30 for Europe

The second component of the status offer is fairly straightforward, and can be a significant motivator towards pursuing Aeroplan Elite Status in 2022.

From January 1 through April 30, members will earn 100% bonus SQM, SQS, and SQD on their paid flying activity with Air Canada on Economy Standard fares or higher.

Then, from May 1 through September 30, members will continue to earn 100% bonus SQM, SQS, and SQD on their paid flying activity with Air Canada on Economy Standard fares or higher – to European destinations only.

No registration is required, and the bonuses will be deposited automatically based on your flight activity. That includes paid flights that you’ve taken since the offer period began on January 1.

Effectively, you can make double the usual progress towards your desired elite status thresholds during the promotion period. Another way to think about this is that the usual SQM, SQS, and SQD thresholds are effectively halved.

For those who are keen on earning or maintaining their Aeroplan Elite Status in 2022 for 2023 and beyond via paid flights, this can certainly move the needle for you to bring forward some trips into April or sooner (or European trips into September or sooner), or direct some of the flights you planned to book with other airlines to Air Canada instead.

Once again, the bonus SQD here also helps to get you closer to a Priority Reward.

If you’ve earned the easy 500 bonus SQD as mentioned above, then you’d only need to spend $1,750 on paid Air Canada flights during this promotion period to earn a further 3,500 SQD, which would then earn you a Priority Reward voucher that can be used for a 50% discount on an Aeroplan redemption.

That’s a pretty hefty discount compared to the usual threshold of 4,000 SQD for your first Priority Reward voucher, and it’s worth factoring in your potential Priority Reward earnings when deterring how far you’ll go with this series of status promotions.

The 100% bonus SQD will help you get closer to earning Priority Reward vouchers.

Up to 5,000 SQM + 50% SQD with Air Canada Vacations

Finally, if you book an Air Canada Vacations package that fully takes place between January 1 and April 30, you’ll earn 2,500 or 5,000 SQM, plus 50% SQD on your purchase:

  • Aeroplan 25K or 35K members will receive 2,500 SQM
  • Aeroplan 50K, 75K, or Super Elite members will receive 5,000 SQM
  • All members will receive 50% SQD of their total purchase price

The total purchase price of the entire vacation package will be divided by the number of travellers, and each traveller will earn their own bonus SQM and SQD regardless of the member who purchased the package.

Air Canada Vacations packages are typically not eligible for Aeroplan Elite Status earnings, so this promotion could be a reason to pick a vacation package over an independent trip if you were otherwise on the fence, or perhaps book a vacation package that you’ve planned with another provider through Air Canada Vacations instead.

No More Aeroplan Elite Status Extension in 2022?

Air Canada had automatically extended all members’ Aeroplan Elite Status back in 2020, and then again in 2021, due to the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Now that we’re looking ahead at brighter times in 2022 despite continued challenges around global travel, Air Canada has come out early in the year with a series of accelerated status promotions instead. I’d interpret that as a sign that it’s highly unlikely that we’ll see another further extension this year like we saw in the past few years.

The 100% bonus status qualifying activity promotion is particularly generous, and could see much of Air Canada’s “regular” status members (i.e., those who earn status through paid flying) shifting their behaviour to making significant progress towards their status goals in the promotion period, especially as domestic travel in Canada has recovered to be a fairly commonplace experience.

With the regular status ranks taken care of, plus the ongoing opportunity for casual members to earn 25K status through Everyday Status Qualification, I’d predict that Air Canada would only continue to offer creative status incentives throughout the rest of 2022.

A blanket extension like we saw in previous years would be very unlikely, unless there’s another dramatic downturn in the prospects of future travel (in which case we’d have bigger things to worry about).

Conclusion

Hot on the heels of the spend-based status promotion in late 2021, Air Canada and Aeroplan have put on another series of offers to help members progress towards their Aeroplan Elite Status goals in 2022.

You’ll earn an easy 5,000 SQM, 5 SQS, and 500 SQD simply be engaging with Aeroplan by a modest amount, and then you’ll have the opportunity to double your SQM, SQS, and SQD earnings through paid Air Canada flights by April 30 – which has now been extended to September 30 for flights to Europe.

For those interested in Air Canada Vacations packages, a 50% SQD bonus could move the needle on your purchase as well.

As we transition into looking forward to the end of the pandemic, we’re likely to see Air Canada offer further generous status promotions like these instead of the blanket extensions that we saw in 2020 and 2021.

5000 sqm 5 sqs 500 sqd… anyone else still waiting for these to be credited ? sent a email off after 8 wks from Apr 30 but No reply yet and No points etc yet
assuming due to Aeroplan / Air Canada issues at moment

    1. bouncybrad

same here. on the line to Aeroplan right now and they don’t know what I’m talking about. What is the name of this promo??

      1. bouncybrad

my bad, I missed the critical point that this is for elite status members only, not those trying to reach 25k status

  2. Cards

    This is very helpful information.

I am currently elite 35K status and assume I don’t do anything else. I have 2 questions:
    * Can I get 35K status again in 2023 if I keep my aeroplan reserved card?
    * Can I carry over 50 upgrade points to 2023 if I keep my aeroplan reserved card?

    Thank you

I have a question about 100% Bonus SQM, SQS, SQD Through April 30 + September 30 for Europe.
I plan to fly to Turkey in September from YUL and will consider buying a ticket on Air Canada website if it qualifies for 100% SQD bonus. The connection will be in Europe.
Will it work for the bonus? I know it was mentioned that the ticket should start with 0144 or something but how would I know that before buying a ticket? Thanks!

  4. Rohan

I only achieved 25K status a few days prior to April 30. Will I still be eligible to receive the 5000 bonus SQM which was for “existing” Aeroplan Elite members assuming 3/5 activities were completed?

  5. Justin

My first 5 or 6 flights after January 1st showed up with the promotion on my aeroplan app right away, but none of the flights since then have shown up. Any thoughts on how long it is supposed to take to show up?

Would the double points offer to Europe apply when Europe is a stop over en route to say, the Middle East? Or does it need to be final destination

    1. Yasser Massimi

I have the same Q. Did you find out ?

  7. Deb

Any DP? Do cash flights booked with flight passes count?

    1. Deb

Never mind, while not an Unlimited Flight Pass, which is mentioned in the T&C, T&C also say Offer B is valid only on “published” fares.

      1. YFCAcademic

However, “Offer B is valid only on published fares eligible for the accumulation of Aeroplan points and Status Qualifying Currency.” Clearly FP are available for Aeroplan point accumulation. And only “Unlimited Flight Pass” are explicitly excluded. I hope to get the bonus for my FP flights.

End of Feb I had a flight in business class supposed to route through LHR to YVR on AC metal, but due to a last second cancellation (bad weather) the SE concierge routed me through FRA to YVR on a Lufthansa flight.

Anyone have any idea if I’ll be eligible for the double SQM/SQD promo seeing as I was supposed to fly on an AC flight?

    Thanks,

  9. Francois Roussel

If one book a Europe trip in February for travel in May, will the 100% promo still applies or only for new reservations

  10. peterprinciple

Would the 100% sqm/s/d bonus stack with the current BC province 100% bonus points promo? Assuming cash fare and before April 30

    1. Yasser Massimi

I have the same Q. Did you find out ?

  11. John

Thanks Ricky, appreciate this blog. Does this offer only apply to existing elite status members? I’m working towards my 25 so assume I wouldn’t be eligible for this? Thanks in advance

  12. WestCoastFlyer

Hi Ricky. Love the blog. Very helpful content.

Question: Do you know if the bonus is supposed to post immediately or do all the bonuses get applied at the end of the promotion period?

The reason I ask is I just flew return on a paid Standard Economy fare from YVR-YEG on February 1st and 2nd of this year. My Aeroplan Activity shows 251 SQM per flight, which is 50% of the flight miles. No bonus. Same for a SFO-YVR flight in P from January of this year (AC metal) that shows 150% of the flight miles for SQM, which is normal and doesn’t include any bonus.

    Thanks!

      1. David S

They are all over the map with this. I have this promotion applied to my several of my flights from January 1, 2022 to February 13, 2022. However, flights from this point to current have not received the bonus yet.

  13. amboyd

As always, appreciate getting the info from your blog post, and can click on the link in your post to see the details of the three status requalification offers, but can’t find the same info when I log into the AC/Aeroplan site myself. Not the first time it has happened. When I click on the Aeroplan promotions, all I see are a bunch of Valentines day promos. Any ideas what I am doing wrong?

    1. Ricky YVR

I don’t think you’re doing anything wrong. Air Canada simply prefers to advertise certain promotions through certain channels, that’s all.

  14. Scott

can’t link my Uber or Uber Eats account…I was able to Starbucks but after a few months of occasional attempts I continually receive the message that aeroplan (scanning the code) cannot connect uber or uber eats acct. I wonder if anyone has experienced this and a solution?

  15. Noorali YYZ YYZ

Hey Ricky. I finally received my 35K status for 2022. Thanks to “Prince of Travel”!
Wondering what happens if we do not meet the qualifying miles or Aeroplan doesn’t extend / roll-over elite status for next year. Do we loose our status completely or drop down to lower tier i.e. 25K status in my case?

    1. Steve

Wondering too. I would assume a lot of people who visit here would be in the same boat. That is, received status through spend and promos in 2021. Also, if we lose status for 2023, does that mean any rollover eupgrades (due to a card like the Amex Reserve) wouldn’t apply because you no longer hold status?

    2. Raj

Curious about this too. So would you need to earn and qualify for 50K for next year? Or can you just spend/fly enough to meet the 25K or 35K requirements?

  16. Justin

I still have not recieved my status for $10 000 spend from last year. Very frustrating.

  17. Gustav

If you qualify by completing 3 of the 5 requirements and get the 5000 SQM (after April 30), will they also add a corresponding 5000 Aeroplan Points to your account? Trying to evaluate if someone should put in the effort to qualify in case their final 2022 total SQM/SQDs do not get them upgraded to the next status level.

  18. Francois

Notice we have to pay cash to get the 100% bonus on booked flights so I wssume if you pay with a credit card it does not qualify

    1. Ricky YVR

“Pay cash” means a regular revenue fare, contrasted against a points redemption. AC isn’t going to make members go to the airport to fork over physical cash for flights.

    2. Mitch

I would expect that this just means any paid fare (bought through any means), points bookings are excluded.

  19. Raj

    1. Do we need to register for this offer?

    2. If we have pre-booked flights between Jan 1 to April 30 PRIOR to the release of this offer, do they qualify for double SQD?

ie. I booked a round trip for $2500 SQD PRIOR to the release of this offer. The travel dates are March 5-19. Do I need to cancel and rebook? or do my current prebooked dates qualify?

    3. Are we eligible to qualify for multiple offers? ie. Part A/1, B/2 and C/3?

4.Anyone else out of country having trouble linking their Uber/Uber Eats account with Aeroplan? / What is the resolution?

    1. Legyver

Yes, I’m having a problem linking and there is a thread on FTalk of others with the issue. I last used Uber eats in Amsterdam so I think that might be part of it. Just keeps saying “unable to link account.” I’m in Canada now so it’s not a physical location issue. Probably software related.

      1. Raj

I have contacted Uber for help and they have no solutions either. I might try making a new account once I am back in canada with Canadian Only personal info

        1. Legyver

In 2 weeks I will be in an area that has Uber, currently no Uber where I am. I will try using it and see if it fixes the software location issue.

    2. Ricky YVR

      1) No
      2) Yes
      3) Yes

      1. Raj

        ❤️

  20. Pete

Will the 100% bonus SQM count towards million mile status with Air Canada?

    1. Rohan

I only achieved 25K status a few days prior to April 30. Will I still be eligible to receive the 5000 bonus SQM which was for “existing” Aeroplan Elite members assuming 3/5 activities were completed?

    2. Ricky YVR

      Nope.

    3. Michael

Of course not. Those are LQM, not SQM.

    4. Matt

I would like to know this too…

  21. Sam

Would a flight have to depart and land by 23:59 EST on April 30 to qualify?

I have a paid J flight that leaves on April 30th in the late afternoon, and wouldn’t land until after midnight EST. Would suck to miss out on the bonus SQD/SQS/SQM because of that.

  22. Franey

If I have a trip which is mix Air Canada and a Star Alliance partner (lets say Qatar), would I earn the 100% bonus SQS/SQM/SQD on the entire trip, or just the portion of the trip which is covered by Air Canada?

    1. Sam

QR is very much not a Star Alliance carrier.

    2. Ricky YVR

The promo terms specify that the 100% bonus SQM/SQS/SQD is for Air Canada operated flights only.

      1. Raj

So if I am flying Aer Lingus but I booked the trip thought Air Canada, I would received the SQD for that trip no?

        1. Ali

No because it’s not Air Canada operated…

  23. Alex YYZ

Any word on Elite status run through a premium AP credit card, like last year?
I mean – get up to 35K only by virtue of spending with the premium credit card?

    1. Ricky YVR

      None.
