Review: Delta Kamloops

We stayed at the Delta Kamloops as part of our train ride with the Rocky Mountaineer. The only other Marriott property in Kamloops is the Fairfield Inn and Suites, and the Delta happens to be one of the better, if not the best, hotels in the area.

As a smaller city, Kamloops doesn’t have too many other accommodation options that can be booked using points. If you find yourself in this part of central British Columbia, the Delta Kamloops will likely be your best bet. 

Delta Kamloops – Booking

This stay was automatically included as a part of our Rocky Mountaineer reservation, so we didn’t have to shell out any additional cash or points for the stay. 

Cash prices at this property for a one-night stay fall between $100–200 in the low season, increasing to $250–300 during busier times. If booking with Marriott Bonvoy points, you can anticipate paying 18,000–30,000 points per night.

Based on our current valuation of 0.9 cents per point, you are likely better off paying cash and saving your points for a more aspirational redemption, though there are times when redeeming points might make sense. 

Delta Kamloops – Location

The Delta is centrally located in Downtown Kamloops. You’ll find numerous shops, restaurants, and coffee shops all within walking distance, with beautiful scenery to admire on your way.

Riverside Park is just 12 minutes by foot from the Delta. The park is situated on the banks of the Thompson River, and makes for a great place to go for a walk while enjoying views of the surrounding nature.

You’ll also find the Sandman Centre close to Riverside Park, where you can check out a hockey game if you’re visiting during the season.

Thompson Rivers University is less than 10 minutes from the hotel by car, while Sun Peaks, the closest ski hill, is about 45 minutes away.

Other popular attractions near the Delta include the Kamloops Wildlife Park and the Monte Creek Winery, both within a 20-minute drive from the hotel.

Lastly, the Kamloops Airport is just 15 minutes from Delta by car, or around 50 minutes by bus.

Delta Kamloops – Check-in

On this particular occasion, our hotel keys had been handed out onboard the Rocky Mountaineer train, so we didn’t need to check in upon arrival. Rather, we just proceeded to our room as soon as we arrived at the hotel.

Entering the hotel, the check-in desks are to the left, while the elevators are to the right.

There are a few couches and chairs dotted around the lobby lounge. The hotel’s restaurant, Cordo Resto & Bar, is situated near to the check-in desks and lobby lounge, too. 

The hotel underwent a renovation in 2019, and the new lobby is very much in keeping with the modern aesthetic of Delta’s newest properties.

After checking out the lobby, we headed up to Room 534, located on the fifth floor of the hotel.

Delta Kamloops – King Room with City View

The King Room with City View was soft, bright, and minimalistic. The standard modern Delta aesthetic was also apparent here.

I appreciated getting such a nice room in a modest-sized city in the heartland of British Columbia. You might not immediately think of nicer hotels being tucked away in these areas, but I felt that the quality of the Delta Kamloops was a pleasant surprise.

The king bed was the centrepiece of the room, and was plush and comfortable. The brown leather headboard was a nice touch, complimenting the light wood accent behind it.

To the left of the king bed was a single bright red armchair, with a side table next to it.

On the wall opposite the bed was a long desk, with ample surface space, charging ports, and USB outlets. To the left of the desk was a luggage rack.

On the far right of the desk was a small coffee and tea station, while a flat-screen TV hung above.

Furthermore, the hotel’s general manager happened to be a reader of Prince of Travel. Upon our arrival, the desk had a very friendly welcome note and some thoughtful additional amenities, including some extra snacks and Voss water.

The bathroom was also sleek and modern, with a single vanity featuring a rectangular LED mirror.

The shower was stylish and pleasant, the jet-black accents of the bathroom adding a touch of refinement to the otherwise standard Delta look.

Overall, the room was very suitable for our needs, and had everything we’d want for a comfortable night’s stay. We also enjoyed being treated to welcoming views of the Kamloops city centre and rolling hills off in the distance during our brief stay in town.

Delta Kamloops – Breakfast

Marriott Bonvoy Platinum, Titanium, and Ambassador Elite members can enjoy a complimentary breakfast in the restaurant at the Delta Kamloops.

Alas, our train would depart from Kamloops relatively early in the morning, and we needed to board the coach bound for the trainyard bright and early at 6:15am. Since breakfast only began at 7am, we didn’t get a chance to check out the hotel breakfast before we left.

Breakfast is served at the hotel’s only restaurant, Cordo Resto & Bar. The breakfast menu can be found on the restaurant’s website.

Delta Kamloops – Pantry

The Delta Kamloops features a Pantry, which is accessible to Marriott Bonvoy members with Platinum status or above.

Situated on the fifth floor, the Pantry is offered in lieu of a larger Club Lounge, which is usually a standard offering of the Delta brand. 

In the morning, you’ll find a few breakfast items available, such as bagels, muffins, and pastries. Throughout the rest of the day, there are some snacks, hot and cold drinks, and other grab-and-go options.

The Pantry is a very modest additional perk if you’re a higher-tier Marriott Bonvoy elite member – better than nothing, but not much to write home about.

Delta Kamloops – Other Facilities

The fitness centre contains a few options for a good workout, including treadmills, elliptical machines, and cycles. Additionally, you’ll find some dumbbells and a cable machine. 

The heated rooftop pool is mostly outdoors, but is also partially covered by a roof. The facility was attractive and of a decent size, with a few lounge chairs on the side, nice city views, and a hot tub.

Conclusion

The Delta Kamloops is a solid choice for a centrally-located hotel in Kamloops. After a comprehensive refurbishment in 2019, it’s now commonly regarded as one of the best properties available in the area.

Whether you’re visiting Kamloops for outdoor activities, a pit stop, or a sports event, the Delta would be my recommended choice of accommodation, with all the essentials for a comfortable stay despite its relatively unassuming profile.
